Jane Eyre Jane Eyre /ˌdʒeɪn ˈeə $ ˈer/ ( 1847) a book by Charlotte Brontë about a young woman called Jane Eyre who becomes a governess and agrees to marry her employer, Mr Rochester, not knowing that he already has a wife who is mentally ill and kept locked in the attic (=a room under the roof) of the house.
